The sounds of a screening

There is nothing like seeing and especially hearing a movie in a theatre. There have been a lot of festivals that have selected Onru and some have given it awards, but these days finding a festival that will screen your film is difficult. I was so excited to get a phone call from Peter at the Indie Vegas Film Festival to hear that our film would screen in person. That is where this all started… sitting in a movie theater, watching movies, in person, with your friends. Back in high school we would spend the night outside the theatre waiting for opening night for the big summer move of that year.

When I was working on Onru, sound was a big deal. I had never done a 5.1 surround sound edit before and I was pretty nervous. I saw a lot of posts on how different outputs didn’t work or it didn’t sound the way it was supposed to. I worked really hard on trying to get the music, sound effects, dialogue sound good and provide a “theatre” experience. But once the file was made there was no way to know how it would sound until it played in a theatre.

That day finally came, and I was thrilled to see and hear Onru play in a theatre. It was overwhelming to have the cinema experience while worrying the whole time that something would go wrong. It was a long 13 minutes and 30 seconds. But at the end of the day I was rewarded by being able to see all this hard work live in a theatre.

Even better I was completely surprised to be called up during the awards ceremony to receive the Best Sound in a Short Film Award.

I am truly grateful to Peter and Jon and everyone at the Indie Vegas Film Festival. I look forward to more opportunities to show this work in more theatres.
